Random attack may be connected to a second assault

Monday night’s attack that left a man beaten beyond recognition in Inglewood may be linked to another violent assault.

37-year-old Marcus Deveaux was found lying on the street in front of his home near 22nd Avenue and 17th Street SE.

Darrin Amond is charged with second-degree murder and another suspect is also being questioned.

There are now reports of another, similar incident that happened downtown the same night Deveaux was murdered.

Another victim was assaulted at the Centre Street LRT station, later that night.

As for Deveaux’s death, it looks the incident may have all started over a cigarette.

Amond’s sister, Jo-Ann, reportedly spoke with her brother just yesterday; he told her he’d been walking with a friend to go buy some cigarettes. He said his friend asked Deveaux for a smoke and Deveaux answered, “Sorry, I have none.” And that’s apparently when the situation escalated.

A Facebook group has now been set up in Deveaux’s memory. A statement on the page reads, “His peaceful and gentle nature will live on in our hearts for an eternity.”
