Weather big concern as 2010 Winter Olympics set to open

With lots of rain and warm temperatures in the forecast, concern is being raised about staging some of the events at the Vancouver Olympics.

Organizers say they do have contingency plans in place and they will do what they have to to get all the competitions in.

Training events at Whistler and Cypress had to be cancelled yesterday because of fog.

Tonight, the opening ceremonies will be held at B.C. Place Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. Calgary time. The event will be broadcast live on 10 different networks in 11 different languages.

Still no word as to who will be given the honour to light the Olympic Cauldron during the opening ceremonies, but organizers say it won’t be Wayne Gretzky.

The longest torch relay in Olympic history wraps up today, and among those carrying the flame on the final day is California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Over the past 106 days the Olympic flame has traveled more then 45 thousand kilometers, stopping in more than 1000 Canadian communities.

Tonight the flame atop the Calgary Tower will burn between 7 and 9 p.m.

The flame will also burn between 5 and 6 p.m. each day of the games when a Canadian athlete or team wins a medal.
