Track where athlete died scared local racer

Two lugers based in our city say the accident that killed the 21-year-old luger from Georgia yesterday is rare.

49-year-old Danny Brownrigg competed last year in Whistler at the same track.

He tells the Calgary Sun, although the design of the track probably wasn’t a factor in the crash, the track can be too fast for those who aren’t focused.

Brownrigg says he took a couple of runs down the track and it really scared him. He adds it’s too fast, but it goes back to who should be racing on that track.

Former Olympian Bob Gasper who also crashed at Lake Placid calls the accident a freak occurrence and a tragic accident.

According to Gasper there have only been four incidents on the luge run, since 1984.
