Healthcare boost will reduce wait times

Alberta Health Services has announced it will use a funding boost from the Stelmach government to address a backlog of surgeries and medical scans.

Thousands of additional heart, cancer and joint surgeries will now be possible, after a record increase in healthcare spending in the new provincial budget.

The procedures and medical scans will be added at eight hospitals, at a cost of roughly eight million dollars.

Stephen Duckett, CEO of Alberta Health Services, says they recognize that wait times are too long, but the additional funding will fix the problem.

The new Alberta budget wipes out the health authorities $1-billion deficit and increases funding by six per cent in each of the next five years.
