Extra dollars needed for Calgary footbridge

Alderman Ric McIver is seeing red.

City council will be asked Monday to pony up an extra $20 million for a foot-bridge connected to St. Patrick’s Island.

That means the original budget for the bridge has almost doubled to $45 million.

McIver tells The Calgary Sun, he has no problems with the work done to date but they’ve rolled the bridge in with unspecified improvements and he says he will not approve it Monday.

The city has already approved $250 million for East Village.

The money is to go towards cleaning up the area that has become a haven for drug users and prostitutes.

Alderman Joe Ceci says despite the lack of clarity around the  improvements, he still thinks it’s money well spent.
