The loss in men’s hockey last night capped off a rough weekend for the Canadian Olympic team.
On the speed skating track, two athletes were in the gold medal race, but finished 4th and 5th.
A Canadian was in the bronze medal position in ski-cross, but crashed.
And in Skeleton, Melissa Hollingsworth was supposed to win it all, but finished 5th.
Predictions from the “Own the Podium” program were that we would win 30 medals at these games, but with one week left, there’s only nine on the board.
Fans and supporters are summing up the first week of the games with one word: disappointment.
Calgarians say Canada’s athletes are not living up to the hype promised by the “Own the Podium” program.
“I think they have to review it. They’ve spent a lot of money on the podium program and we may not even catch Turino,” says one man.
But others say Canada’s athletes are trying their best at the games, and believe if that effort results in just nine medals, they’re happy with it.
