Alberta Should Consider Fining Non-voters

Did you vote in the last provincial election?

Two Alberta MLA’s say it’s time for the government to consider fining people who don’t vote.

In the 2008 provincial election, only 40 percent of eligible voters actually voted.

In Australia, it is law to vote, and if you don’t cast a ballot you’re faced with a financial penalty.

NDP leader Brian Mason and Liberal MLA Kevin Taft tell the Calgary Herald, it’s a good idea to consider fining people who don’t vote.

But Premier Ed Stelmach says if people don’t vote, it could be because they’re pleased with the status quo.
