Hostage-taking ends at S.W. school

City police say a former student took a secretary hostage at knifepoint at a junior high school in southwest Calgary this afternoon(Thursday).

According to Inspector Frank Reuser, a 25-year-old armed with a knife was holding the woman in the office of AE Cross School.  Then shortly before 4p.m., police escorted the suspect out of the school in hand cuffs.

Police moved in to surround the school earlier in the afternoon and hostage negotiators were brought it.

Reuser says the former student appeared to be angry over an injury he suffered in the past, and blames school officials.

What the suspect didn’t know, was a 13-year old boy was hiding in the next office and called his mom, who called police.

The rest of the school was at an assembly at the time, and were safely evacuated to nearby Glenbrook Elementary at 4725 – 33rd Avenue S.W.

Those who use chartered bus service or access Calgary Transit, have left Glenbrook School.

Students who walk to school will remain in the gym at Glenbrook School and parents are advised to personally pick up their child from that location.
