International Women’s Day

There will be a celebration and potluck this evening in Calgary to mark International Women’s Day.

The get together is at the Carpenter’s Community Hall in the northwest beginning at 5:30 p.m.

But one local group says women have less to celebrate this year.

In 2009,  a change was made to the equal work for equal pay legislation, eliminating the ability for unions to stand up for women working in the public sector.

Dolly Ablitt with the Public Service Alliance of Canada says those women can not take their complaint to the Human Rights Commission.  She says under the equitable compensation rule, unions that do help can be fined up to $ 50,000.
