Calgary white-hats Tsuu T’ina Chief

Chief Sanford Big Plume received the honour of being white-hatted Tuesday morning on the Tsuu T’ina reserve just southwest of Calgary.

It’s the first time a First Nations chief has ever been recognized with the celebrated white hat.

“It’s nice, it’s an honour.   I didn’t think ever, you know, a First Nations chief would get this in Calgary.  I’m very honoured,” says Big Plume.

He was given the hat in recognition for all his work to improve housing, education and quality of life on the Nation.

Big Plume tells 660News, this is a symbolic stepping stone.

“I’ve been trying to have a good working relationship, a good neighbourly relationship with the city and I hope to continue that,” he says.

The Chief says he’s happy he’s receiving an honour bestowed on so many celebrities, including his favourite, Henry Winkler.
