Officer charged in alleged assault

An 11-year member of the Calgary police force has been charged with assault.

The Edmonton crown prosecutors office has recommended the charge after a complaint was filed by a woman.

Deputy Chief Al Redford says the alleged incident happened in March 2009.

Redford says the officer was in the process of taking the intoxicated woman home when he received a call about a shooting and decided to put her in a taxi instead.

The alleged assault occurred as the officer was placing the woman into the cab.

The officer is on administrative duties while the case works its way through the court system.  He’s due in court next Wednesday.
