Former Bank of Canada Governor David Dodge says we’ll have to make tough decisions as our population gets older.
He told a liberal conference in Montreal Saturday that Canadians need to consider a host of politically explosive measures like two-tier health care and a dedicated health tax.
Dodge adds that Canadians must be more productive in order to pay for the care that the country’s aging population will need.
According to one tax watchdog, we’re going to see a lot of political hot potatoes being tossed around because of this.
Scott Hennig with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation tells 660News that it makes sense to start investigating whether we should raise the retirement age, much like other countries have done.
Hennig says we’ve known about this for years and have done little to prepare.
However, he also says Dodge didn’t mention a third option in dealing with the upcoming tax load on younger Canadians: opening Canada up to more immigrants.
