Mayor’s race heating up

The race for mayor in Calgary may soon start to get interesting.

According to the Calgary Herald, by the end of April we will find out if Alderman Ric McIver, Alderman Bob Hawkesworth and businessman Alnoor Kassam, plan to run for the city’s top job.

This is the first open race for mayor since 2001 when Dave Bronconnier took the spot.   He announced a month ago he would not be seeking a fourth term.

Even though not everyone has thrown their names in the hat, one local expert says the hot topics of the campaign are already clear.

Mount Royal political scientist Duane Bratt tells 660News many of the debates and media wars between candidates will revolve around two major issues.

He says the first is money because the city is $3 billion in debt and aldermen still decide to spend.

He says the ideal mayor will also have to prove they can make aldermen play along in the city council that Bratt says has become ‘a kindergarten.’

He believes it will be a crowded race and with everyone trying to be a front runner, he’s predicting it could get nasty.
