Arson unit investigating fire at Chinook Centre

The arson unit has been called in to investigate a fire at Chinook Centre after officials deemed the Sunday fire suspicious.

Easter shoppers were evacuated from the popular southwest mall around 5:30 p.m.

Fire Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux tells 660News a small fire activated the sprinkler in a non-public hallway.

Crews shut down the sprinkler system and ventilated the area to clear smoke.

Damage to the mall was minor, primarily scorched paint.

A Chinook Centre spokeswoman tells 660News there was also a small amount of water damage in the basement by the administration offices.
