The ranks of the unemployed continue to grow in energy rich Alberta.
The latest jobless numbers from Statistics Canada show 7.5 per cent of the people in this province are not working.
That’s up 6.9 per cent from February, but still below the national average of
8.2 per cent.
The Chief Economist at RBC Global Asset Management tells 660News the numbers are disappointing.
Patricia Croft says Alberta’s unemployment rate is now about twice as high as it was before the recession.
However, she believes as we move into summer, more people will find work and that will push that number down.
Last month the Canadian economy created 18 thousand jobs, although most economists were expected 26 thousand positions to be created.
Over the past several months about half of the people who had lost their jobs because of the economic downturn have been able to find work.
Calgary’s unemployment rate rose a touch last month, now running at 7.2 per cent.
