The funeral for Polish president Lech Kaczinski and his wife went ahead as planned Sunday morning, even though several world leaders were unable to attend because of the volcanic cloud that’s disrupting air travel across Europe.
Hundreds of thousands gathered in Krakow for the mass which lasted a little over an hour, and followed with a burial at Valvo Cathedral.
There is some controversy surrounding the decision to make Valvo the final resting place because many Poles consider the Cathedral to be sacred ground.
Valvo Cathedral is where Pope John Paul II gave his first mass as a priest and it’s also the final resting place of Marshall Jozef Pilsudski, who gained Poland’s independence in 1918 from Germany and Russia.
