Premier Ed Stelmach wants oilsands operators to clean up their act.
Stelmach says it’s time energy producers in northern Alberta move away from tailings ponds, and store their waste in open pit mines.
The tailings ponds have been the target of environmentalists, especially after pictures of dead ducks in the ponds were taken a couple of years ago.
The premier also extended an invitation to James Cameron to come tour the oilsands after the Avatar director criticized the massive energy project.
Stelmach suggests Cameron take a canoe trip down the Athabasca River.
