New statistics show speeding infractions in the province are on the rise.
The Calgary Herald reports between 2004 and 2008, there were almost 1.3 million speeding convictions.
Men were the worst offenders, getting a whopping 78 per cent of those tickets.
University of Alberta injury researcher, Dr. Louis Francescutti tells 660News when it comes to driving, Albertans are a bunch of “neanderthals.”
He believes the best way to get people to slow down and reduce the cost of trauma care in the province is to have more police resources dedicated to the problem.
Francescutti thinks it might be time for drivers involved in injury accidents to start covering part of the cost of hospital care, which he says can amount to thousands of dollars a day.
It’s estimated that direct and indirect costs of collisions in Alberta top $4 billion a year.
Calgary Police Association President, John Dooks says more often than not, speed is a factor in crashes on city streets.
Dooks says drivers who get speeding tickets only have themselves to blame.
