Albertans’ could be heading to the polls

Alberta could get an early provincial election, possibly within the next 12 months.

A new poll in Monday’s Calgary Herald shows the Wildrose Alliance is closing in on the Conservatives with the upstart party receiving 28 per cent support and the Tories getting 34 per cent.

Liberal leader David Swann says he’s been hearing a lot of talk in the legislature.

“If the government continues to bleed support into the Wild Rose Alliance and into the Liberal camp in the centre and if the economy continues to pick up, I see Mr. Stelmach calling an early election,” says Swann.

He points out the premier may try to prevent further losses to his party and call a snap election either this fall or next spring.

Political Scientist Keith Brownsey says he wouldn’t be surprised if it happens.

“He’d be criticized for going this fall for going to soon it’s only been two and a half years since the last election,” says Brownsey.
