Policy requested for secondary suites in Calgary

Calgary doesn’t have policies to guide the location and development of secondary suites in most established neighbourhoods.
Alderman Ric McIver wants to change that and has put forth a notice of motion for a plan to be considered by council in January of 2011.
McIver tells 660News there are two issues of concern. One is having secondary suites to add to the city’s affordable housing stock and the other is organizing them, so there aren’t so many in one spot which ruins the character of a residential community.
He says if the policy is successful it will balance these otherwise conflicting policies.
McIver adds that 15,000 affordable housing units could be added to the city, if one out of 20 low-density homes were to build a secondary suite.
