Energy sector workers needed

Canadian energy companies could be scrambling in the coming years, trying to attract and retain workers.

A new Petroleum Human Resource Council of Canada report says over the next decade, the oil and gas industry might have to fill as many as 100 thousand jobs.

And even if energy demand drops, oil, gas and pipeline companies will still need to find 15,000 workers.

Cheryl Knight with the council says the jobs that need to be filled are not of the temporary or contract basis.

“While the industry is still in recovery and stabilizing in 2010, workers will be needed in some of the industry’s core occupations in 2011 and across the industry as a whole in 2012, when labour supply falls short of employment requirements,” said Knight.

An aging workforce and new activity are the big reasons why energy companies need to find recruits.

Knight says to fill the vacant spots; the industry needs to tap into the immigrant work force while attracting more women and aboriginals.
