Provincial bereavement program being reworked

A counselling program in Alberta designed to help family members of homicide victims deal with the aftermath is being reworked by Alberta Health Services and some of the members aren’t happy about it.

What started as a six-week group therapy session became monthly two-hour meetings and some members even drifted away from Alberta Health’s original goals for the group and began focusing their efforts on changing the justice system.

Premier Ed Stelmach says he’s not going to leave these people without support and the program will still stay in the health system. He adds the AHS has the task of meeting all their priorities.

The program has been in existence for four years now.

Alberta Health Services wants to restore the program back to its roots, which include 1-on-1 sessions and will help members form a separate community group, if they wish.
