A colourful beetle is making a feast of lilies in our city.
Experts warn if the red lily beetle population gets too out of control, it could destroy swaths of local lilies.
Calgary Parks says just one of the beetles can devour an entire plant in less than a day.
“It’s a very active feeder … and because it’s an invasive insect that’s not from this part of the world, there’s nothing that’s going to be out there controlling it,” says Simon Wilkins.
The bugs are six to eight millimetres long and are strong flyers.
Officials recommend taking the beetles off the plant and putting them in soapy water.
