The warm weekend gave many Calgarians the chance to catch up on yardwork that’s been delayed by a rainy spring.
Many likely spent their sunny Sunday trying to stave off an invasion of dandelions.
A spokesman for city parks says we shouldn’t be surprised to see more than the usual number of the pesky yellow weeds than usual.
James Borrow of Calgary’s Pest Management Program tells 660News this spring has provided ideal conditions for dandelions to get a strong hold on our lawns. We had prolonged rain in May following a dry April that had many of us praying for the rain.
“It looks like our prayers have been answered, double. It certainly has been very cool and we’ve received a lot of moisture so it’s given some of these weedy plants an opportunity to grow a little better than they may have in a normal, typical year,” he says.
Borrow says the rain has also kept our lawnmowers in the shed while our grass grows higher along with the dandelions.
He says the best defence against the weed is regular cuts, with our lawns maintained at a height between 2 and 2 1/2 inches.
