As the Royal Tyrrell Museum celebrates its 25th anniversary in Drumheller this year, Thursday’s announcement of the largest dinosaur bonebed ever found is a bonanza!
It’s located near Hilda, Alberta, which is 50 kilometres north of Medicine Hat.
The bonebed covers an area of at least 2.3 square kilometres, or the size of 280 football fields.
Senior scientist with the Royal Tyrrell Museum, David Eberth tells 660News, the museum has been successful because they’ve always been very close to the field localities and have collected specimens for the province, so they’ll be out collecting material for many years to come.
The Hilda site provides the first solid evidence that some horned dinosaur herds were much larger than first thought, with numbers comfortably in the high hundreds to low thousands.
