Revitalized 16 Avenue North now complete

There’s plenty of history about the widening of 16th Avenue North.

When Alderman Druh Farrell took out eight community presidents to a hockey game about 10 years ago, she unrolled the old plans for widening the major road — that dated back to 1977!

She asked them what they thought of the idea and after a lot of hard work over the last five years and a final price tag of $80 million, the idea of a road widening is now a reality.

There is also a new centre median, signal upgrades and a much more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier was at Saturday’s unveiling, along with Kyle Fawcett, MLA for Calgary North Hill and Alderman Druh Farrell.

Bronconnier told the crowd of about 800 at Balmoral School, that 16 Avenue North is an integral piece of Calgary’s urban landscape with a rich history that dates back to before the city was incorporated.

As Calgary’s gateway to the Trans-Canada Highway and the focal point of many surrounding communities, it is crucial that this area is one where people want to live, work and shop for years to come.

Many now hope the new 16th Avenue upgrades will see vacant lots filled with booming businesses.
