Southern Alberta braces for more rain and possible flooding

People in soggy low-lying areas of Medicine Hat spent Sunday pumping out basements and taking stock of flood damage.

The brief break in rain won’t last and many in southern Alberta are bracing for more soggy weather.

660 Meteorologist Jill Taylor says a weather warning has been issued by Environment Canada. Many areas in the region could see 30 millimetres of rain on Monday and more is expected to fall in the coming days.

Areas included in the warning: Medicine Hat, Bow Island, Suffield, Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Lethbridge, Taber, Milk River, Cardston, Fort Macleod, Magrath, Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Waterton Lakes National Park.

In Medicine Hat, the city has ordered voluntary evacuations for 600 homes.

Several communities from Alberta to Manitoba have also declared states of emergency.

Alberta officials expect damage from flooding will be in the millions.
