Workplace safety in Alberta called “an embarrassment”

In the past decade, 1285 workers in this province have been killed while on the job.

The Calgary Herald is launching a series of reports exploring the issue.

Injury prevention expert, Dr. Luis Francescutti says when it comes to workplace safety, everybody in this province should be ashamed.

Francescutti says he’s been lobbying for tougher laws and better enforcement of job site safety rules for over 30 years.

He says there is no shortage of blame to go around.

Francescutti tells 660News, Alberta Health Services needs to take charge and clearly spell out a prevention plan, which needs to include the province better enforcing the laws that are already on the books.

He also believes union leaders need to be held accountable for not doing a better job protecting their members.

He says everyone has a role to play to make Alberta a safer place to work so everybody can go home to their families after earning a paycheck .
