New Airdrie interchange open

A major new highway interchange has opened four months ahead of schedule in Airdrie.

Transportation Minister Luke Ouelette helped officially open the $42 million Queen Elizabeth II and Yankee Valley Boulevard interchange.

He tells 660News, a lot of highway projects in Alberta are trucking along, at a reduced cost, thanks to the slowdown in the economy, “This is a great time to invest because we are saving 30 to 40 per cent on a lot of our quotes.”

The old “rat hole”, as it was know to locals, was built in 1969 and couldn’t handle the traffic volume of the fastest growing city in Canada.

Vehicles used to back up on the QE2 towards Calgary during most afternoon rush hour.
