The federal government is chipping in to upgrade the Subway Soccer Centre in Calgary.
$646,739 will go towards replacing the existing natural grass with artificial turf.
“Our government is pleased to invest in this project because it will create even more opportunities for Calgary’s growing soccer community and bring world-class tournaments and events to our city,” said Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Calgary East, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.
Perry Logan, GM with the centre says the upgrade will draw more national and international tournaments and the new drainage system that comes with the turf will also make for a longer playing season.
The city has already given $4.5 million for the project with the provincial government giving $325,000.
