Animal rights activists protest Stampede rodeo

An animal rights group took their message of boycotting sponsors to the streets of Calgary Saturday.

Around a dozen protesters gathered at Tompkins Park along 17th Avenue, holding up signs protesting the Calgary Stampede rodeo.

The protesters say people should boycott Bell Canada which has sponsored a steer wrestling event.

An official with the Stampede says Bell is still a sponsor of the rodeo, but no longer funds that particular competition.

Jeremy Thomas, a spokesman with the group tells CTV, every year animals are injured and killed during the Stampede for the sake of entertainment, not to mention the ones that get killed during practice sessions.

Officials with the event are defending it, saying that thousands attend each year and watch the rodeo on television.
