Southwest ring road options do exist, according to group

According to a mayoral candidate in the upcoming municipal election, a group of Calgary planners and construction companies have been working on their own solution to the controversial southwest ring road for eight years.

Not only has the consortium spent their own time and money on the project, the group’s lead, urban design architect planner Charles Hansen, believes that with new technology the project could be completed in in less than three years. In addition, It would cost a billion dollars less than current estimates.

The consortium’s plan is being touted by mayoral candidate Jon Lord, who is also part of the group.

Besides the billion dollars in construction savings the plan would save some 700 homes in Lakeview, which are rumoured for removal in one of the ring road proposals.

The group claims there would be further economic savings in the millions, based on the fact the new road would be up and running well before current estimates, saving bogged down commuters in the southwest lost time in productivity.

The proposal also includes a variety of financing options, including a possible P3 design.
