Hotel operators in Calgary are crying in their beers ahead of this year’s Stampede.
Bookings from out-of-towners are still languishing at the same level as last year, when there was a big drop because of the recession.
The President of the Calgary Hotel Association tells the Calgary Sun the first weekend of Stampede is slightly stronger, but the second week is worse than 2009.
There are still rooms available in the core for less than $200 a night.
Even high end establishments like the Palliser are slashing rates.
Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser says the fact of the matter is 70 per cent of visitors will come from the local area and won’t be staying in the city.
