The Calgary Stampede and the Calgary Humane Society haven’t always been on the same page when it comes to animal care.
However, that relationship is getting better, especially with recent changes making rodeo and chuckwagon events much safer.
They’re especially happy about a major change this year involving steer wrestling.
It comes after a steer suffered a spinal injury during the event last year and had to be put down.
This year, if a steer falls with its legs under it or pointing away from the rider, the cowboy will be given a “no time”.
Dr. David Chalack, a Calgary Stampede veterinarian tells CTV that it was a smooth transition. The Stampede is the first rodeo in North America to implement this rule.
