Workers smoothing way for Chucks

Groundsworkers at the Calgary Stampede might have had one of the most important jobs in the city Wednesday.

The crew of about a dozen people was assigned the tough task of ensuring the chuck wagons can roll again after last night’s cancellation put a crimp in everyone’s Stampede plans.

The workers were charged with turning the muck into dirt before the Rangeland Derby.

Crews sprang into action when the downpour stopped at about midnight Tuesday after a day of non-stop rain.

One worker tells 660News he’s confident the ground will be in great shape thanks to a long night and a long day of hard work.

“They started last night and they brought vacuum trucks in to truck the water off, then started working it and trying to dry to dry it out as much as they could.   Now they’re spreading sand on the track.”

A steady flow of tractors, graders and trucks were still to be circling the track until just before the horn.
