Barb for mayor?

From reading the news to making the news.

After 21 years at the CTV anchor desk, Barb Higgins announced last night she is stepping down.

It was an emotional goodbye during her newscast with Darrel Janz.

“There are too many highlights to choose from 21 years, so I would like to thank Calgarians for trusting me and welcoming me in their living rooms and their lives. It’s been an incredible honour to be a part of the CTV family,” Higgins said during her last cast.

Higgins has co-anchored with Darryl Janz since 1989 and they’ve delivered nearly 5,000 newscasts together.

Higgins has made a decision about what’s next for her, but wouldn’t say what it is.

There is now growing speculation that she will mimic the path of former journalist and premier Ralph Klein, and take a run for the mayor’s chair.

The evidence seems to be growing just like the rumours.

We’ve found out the websites barbformayor.com and barbformayor.ca have been registered to a Calgary communications company, that at times has worked in the political world.

“There have been various speculations going through my mind but she has honestly not told me or anyone else here what she’s going to be doing. I really cannot say,” Darrel Janz tells 660 News.

In the past Higgins has denied a bid for mayor, but in a recent Calgary Herald interview she didn’t deny it.

Experts are weighing in on the matter. Pollsters and political scientists tell the Calgary Sun, she would be a game changer and a serious contender in the race for mayor. That’s because she has strong ties to the community and has a very recognizable name and face.
