The Calgary Fire Department is going green.
The department’s training academy has teamed up with ATCO Gas to build a water re-use project. The pond filtration system recycles tens of millions of litres of water used in training that before would have gone down the drain.
“This pond filtration system is a first of its kind in Canada,” said Fire Chief Bruce Burrell. “Instead of spraying potable water all over the facility’s grounds and watching it ice up, run down drains, or evaporate, contaminated fire run-off will be retreated and reused.” he adds.
Also, as part of the landscaping portion of the water re-use project, 125 trees have been planted to commemorate the Fire Department’s 125th anniversary in 2010.
