Calgary slammed by summer storm

People living in the south are trying to pick up the pieces after being hit hard by a severe summer storm Monday night.

Rain and hail hammered communities like Sundance, Deer Run, Woodbine, Midnapore, Evergreen and Auburn Bay.

It was so strong that many streets and intersections were flooded.

A funnel cloud was spotted outside of Calgary.

The storm caught many people off guard.

In the afternoon, it was sunny and hot, but within minutes, the sky turned black and rain and hail were pounding down.

Storms like this are common at this time of year and it’s actually due to the heat.

“The sun heats the ground and that warm air rises into cooler air above. Before you know it, storms pop up,” says 660 Meteorologist David Spence.

It didn’t take long for intersections to turn into lakes and some streets were so flooded, the water was more than two feet deep.

Some listeners say the storm was so intense it looked like a hurricane.

“I was driving around the corner and it was like a river on the street. Then a manhole (exploded) in front of me, gushing water six feet in the sky,” Jesse, who lives in Woodlands, tells 660News.

Some people had their basements flooded and many trees toppled on to homes due to the strong winds.

This 660News listener tells us he saw a funnel cloud southeast of the city.

“Even through the dark cloud you could see the thing coming down.”

Environment Canada hasn’t confirmed the funnel cloud yet.

The same storm system did produce a tornado in Montana. Two people were killed in the destruction.
