U.S. federal officials now estimate the amount of oil that leaked from a Canadian pipeline into a Michigan river on Monday is more than previously thought –
3.8 million litres.
Oil from the leak has now travelled some 55 kilometres down the Kalamazoo river, leaving the leading edge of the oil only 125 kilometres from Lake Michigan.
State Governor Jennifer Granholm is not happy about cleanup efforts so far, calling them ” wholly inadequate”.
About 400 people are now involved in the cleanup.
Enbridge officials say they can’t say yet how long the cleanup might take, how much it will cost, or what might have caused the leak.
Calgary-based Enbridge vows to do ” anything and everything ” to clean up all that might be affected by the oil.
