Enbridge was warned about Michigan pipeline

A letter warning Calgary based Enbridge it wasn’t properly monitoring corrosion problems with its Michigan pipeline has surfaced.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration sent a warning letter to the company dated January 21st.

The pipeline has now leaked close to 4 million litres of oil into Michigan’s Kalamazoo river.

An Enbridge spokesperson says they do regular maintenance on all lines and use all available technology to target weaknesses in pipe.

The troubled 6B pipeline had close to 139 digs done on it, in conjunction with the regulator, however the point of the break was not scheduled to be sleeved or replaced.

The company also talked extensively on what it was doing to clean up the mess and covering costs associated with the spill.

Enbridge says there are seventeen established boom sites between the spill and Morrow Lake along with fifteen boats and over two hundred workers on the river mopping up the leak.

There are fears the oil could make its way to Lake Michigan.
