Group nixes mayoralty candidates forum

The closed-door mayoral forum that was planned for early next month by the Calgary Economic Development has been shelved and that decision has caused waves with the candidates.

The event was to take place September 7th and 8th. According to the CED, the forum was intended to be a information session and conversation among candidates about economic development in the city.

Some candidates, however, said the forum should be open to the public and not held in private.

President and CEO of the CED, Bruce Graham, tells 660News his group isn’t set up to hold public forums and so the idea was scrapped. He adds, the CED might look at holding a information session once a mayor is elected this fall.

Mayoral hopeful Paul Hughes says the CED has dropped the ball by cancelling the forum, while Barb Higgins tells 660News the group had good intentions and the intent was in the right place. Meanwhile, candidate Bob Hawkesworth adds that if Calgarians have concerns about where the city’s economy is headed, they shouldn’t hesitate to contact any of the hopefuls directly.
