Another blow to the families of 20 women who vanished from Vancouver’s downtown eastside.
The Crown has decided not to go ahead with their cases, now that serial killer Robert Pickton is already serving life in prison.
New details about evidence the jury never got to hear is also coming to light following the partial lifting of a publication ban.
A sex trade worker, who cannot be identified, claims she escaped from Pickton’s Port Coquitlam, B.C. pig farm in 1997.
She says she slashed Pickton on the neck after he came up behind her and put a handcuff on one of her wrists.
Both suffered life threatening injuries, with hospital staff finding a key in Pickton’s clothes that matched the handcuffs.
He was charged in that attack, but charges against him were later stayed because the Crown determined she was too unstable to testify.
Some relatives of those victims whose cases won’t be tried are disappointed and now hope a public inquiry will shed some light on the investigation.
