New school zone hours

New school zone hours are now in place in Calgary.

The change means drivers have to slow to 30 km/h starting at 7:30 a.m., half an hour earlier than they used to.

The launch of the new start time coincides with the first day of school for students in year round curriculums.

The school zone speed limit changes were brought forward by city council to protect students who show up early for extra curricular activities.

However, playground zones still don’t begin until 8:30 a.m., something that both the Public and Catholic School Boards want changed.

The City of Calgary and Calgary police are also joining in the push for the province to change the start time of playground zones to 7:30 a.m.
