BlackBerry ban in Middle East averted

Saudi Arabia has backed away from its pledge to ban BlackBerry messenger service in the kingdom.

The shutdown was supposed to take effect Friday.

But, early Saturday morning, Saudi officials reached a deal with Research in Motion — the Waterloo, Ontario-based firm that makes the Blackberry.

Under the deal, the company will install a server in the kingdom allowing Saudi officials to monitor BlackBerry data.

Saudi Arabia is among a group of countries that brand the device as a security threat because Blackberry’s encrypted messages cannot be monitored by governments.
