East Village community bash

It’s a big turnaround for an area of Calgary known more in the past for the drug trade than outdoor family events.

The East Village community bash is happening Saturday.  Seniors, students and others are celebrating the re-vitalization of their area.

What used to be streets packed with prostitutes and garbage are now filled with benches and flower pots, a sign that residents of the community want to be outdoors enjoying their neighbourhood.

One man tells 660News that wasn’t the case just 10 years ago.

“They took no responsibility for their community, and that’s changing,” he says.  “People now take pride in this community.”

In addition to live entertainment, there’s also plenty of food, crafts and information on social resources available for those in need.
