Garage fire in the northeast causes heavy damage

Firefighters were able to save a home in the northeast from a blaze Monday evening, but the owners have still lost many of their personal belongings.

The fire broke out in a garage at a home in the 6800 block of 8th Avenue N.E. around 5 p.m. While the house was saved,  most of the family’s furniture was in the garage because of renovations being done.

Battalion chief Ernie Molineaux tells 660News an investigation has started, but officials believe it began after gasoline leaked in the area where a lit cigarette was left.

Damage is estimated at around $80,000.
