An Airdrie elementary school is making national headlines because of a pilot program being launched next month that will see students specialize in one of four key interest areas.
At R.J. Hawkey Elementary School students will be taught the current curriculum with a focus on one of four key interest areas, such as the arts, science, sports, or the environment.
Dr. Sharon Cairns, of the University of Calgary’s Educational Psychology Department says the program is more about engaging students, than having them decide at seven what they’re going to do.
Dr. Cairns expects to see better attendance and higher grades for students who will be taught all subjects in the context of something that piques their interest.
