We get another “Battle of Alberta” showdown this weekend as the Stamps take on the Eskimos this Sunday for McMahon Stadium’s 50th birthday celebrations.
But one sports expert says the classic match-ups between us and our rivals up the QE2, just don’t have the same thrill as they used to.
A good rivalry requires two pretty evenly matched teams and as Globe and Mail sports columnist Bruce Dowbiggin tells 660News, that’s not what we’ll have at McMahon on Sunday.
“It’ll be pretty one-sided,” he says. “The Stampeders are arguably the best team in the CFL, they’re certainly one of the top three and I would say the Eskimos are one of the two or three worst teams in the CFL and don’t appear to be getting any better.”
Dowbiggin adds the real western football rivalry is now between the Stamps and the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but the Eskimos could always improve. He says if that happens, enough animosity exists on both ends of the QE2 to see a return to classic “Battle of Alberta” bad blood.
