The U.K. is now being exposed to the anti-oilsands campaign that’s already sweeping through the U.S.
The Rethink Alberta campaign has been launched overseas with a website that hit the Internet at midnight.
The push for people to avoid Alberta due to our oilsands will be similar to the one that has been ongoing south of the border.
Along with the site, billboards using graphic images will be set up in London in the next few days.
Advertisements will also be bought on some other popular websites in the region.
But the U.K. may not be the final stop for Rethink Alberta, the group wants to expand the campaign throughout Europe.
“The European audience is an important one because you have a lot of investment capital and you have a lot of companies themselves moving in to develop. So London, being the financial heart of England, is an important first step,” Brian Olson of the Rainforest Action Network tells 660News.
11 billboards in total are planned for the U.K.
The campaign itself was under fire for originally promoting innaccurate information.
The energy industry isn’t pleased with the expansion and some believe we’re not doing enough to counter this campaign.
“More work should be done by the government, but more importantly the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers,” Peter Linder of Delta One Energy tells 660News.
He wants to see counter ads playing in Europe so we can tell the “true” story of what’s happening in the oilsands.
