An elderly Calgary couple has narrowly survived a harrowing experience in Mexico.
Ninety-year-old Leslie Amonson, his 86-year-old wife Trudie and their adult daughter Johanne were attacked in Mexico on August 23.
Johanne Amonson tells 660News they were stopped by two gunmen while driving on a highway in Mexico. She says they looked like they were wearing some type of blue uniform and they were carrying machine guns.
Amonson says she told her parents to lock the doors, but her elderly father decided to sacrifice himself and got out of the vehicle. She says he was hauled down the highway at gunpoint.
A busload of Mexican marines stopped at the scene and exchanged gunfire with the bandits however, Amonson says the marines also shot at them.
Canadian officials are now investigating the incident.
Amonson says Mexican authorities believe her SUV was targeted because it is a preferred vehicle for drug running.
She says she still plans to travel again to Mexico but warns Canadians to stay of the highways in the country.
